Huawei will not top global smartphone market this year
'Surprises' bar Chinese company from overtaking Samsung, exec suggests
The US’ more robust position against Huawei Technology has delayed the Chinese company’s advancement overcoming Samsung, a junior Huawei management manager proposed on Tuesday, as the world’s biggest tablet manufacturer.
“If there were no shocksconflicts we would be the biggest in the fourth half of this year,” Shao Yang, Huawei Group Chief Strategy Officer, informed attendees on Tuesday at the CES Asia Technology Show in Shanghai, Shanghai.
Shao did not explain the “shocks” he referred to, but he commented on the de facto import prohibition placed by the Trump government. The U.S. last month Departmental Trade announced that businesses would require licenses to export any U.S. parts or technology to Huawei, compelled technology giants like Google and Western Digital to stop cooperation with the Chinese company.
Smartphones Huawei operates on Google’s Android OS. Analysts and retailers advised that customers in the West would shun Huawei handsets if a smartphone manufacturer leaves links to Google’s apps and branding facilities. The sales plan for Huawei’s P30 Lite Smartphones was already revoked by Japan’s SoftBank Corp. last month, while KDDI is delaying sales of premium handsets originally due at May’s end. Taiwan Semicónductor Manufacturing Co., the biggest chipmaker in the world, told Huawei last week that requests have fallen since the Chinese firm had been affected by the current US limit. Auras Technology, based in Taiwan, another leading Huawei device provider, also said that a Chinese customer impacted commands without specifying which business.
In the second half of 2018, Huawei exceeded Apple and since then has maintained that situation, according to worldwide study company IDC. Shao said the Shenzhen-based business presently produces between 500,000 and 600,000 telephones per day. Smartphone revenues in the first half of 2019 amounted to 59.1 million vehicles, as opposed to revenues by Samsung of 71.9 million for the same era.
